Nursing discreetly is actually fairly simple. Like anything else, the more you do it, the easier it becomes!

Before you get started, become familiar with your baby's cues that tell you he or she wants to nurse. Some babies wiggle around and suck their tiny fists, while others may start to whimper.

Your goal is to pick up on these cues and start your baby nursing as soon as possible, before the whimper turns into a full-fledged cry and attracts the attention of others.

Here Are Three Steps To Nursing In Public

1. Bring your baby close. Discreetly unfasten one opening of your nursing top (or lift your shirt on one side) and unhook your nursing bra.

2. Help your baby latch on, then arrange your clothing to cover your breast. If you are wearing a nursing sling, this is an easy step because you are already covered up!

3. Look up from your baby and get back to your conversation, read a book, or watch the people walking by. Believe it or not, most people won't even know that you are breastfeeding.

In fact, you've probably heard about moms who had someone come up and ask to see their baby during a nursing session. I've had that happen to me several times, which made me smile & laugh as I proudly explained, "You COULD see her, but she's nursing right now!"

These requests to see Ella WHILE I'm nursing her always confirm my suspicions that a breastfeeding baby doesn't usually stand out that much.

Now that you know the "mechanics" of discreet nursing, it's time to practice!  So, the next time you feed your baby at home, sit in front of a mirror and see what you can see.

One of my favorite times to practice is while nursing in a dressing room. After all, you ARE surrounded by a bunch of mirrors!

You can also breastfeed in front of your husband and ask for feedback.

Or, watch how other mothers nurse in public. A good place to do this is at a La Leche League meeting, where you'll see plenty of other moms nursing their babies. If you've never heard of La Leche League, it's the expert on helping moms nurse their babies. And, there are monthly meetings held around the world. Go check one out!
